What did you do in your first year after graduation?
Opened an osteopathic clinic in Cambridge.
What are you doing now?
Full-time osteopath.
Was it easy to find a job or new clients once you had graduated?
It was but I opened for long hours and was available in reception to talk to any potential patients who came in. Word of mouth is a marvellous thing and many of my patients have been recommended.
Do you have any tips or advice for new graduates?
Be approachable and always explain your choice of treatment and your diagnosis. Even if you are not sure exactly what is wrong explain that from the case history you have taken it may be either this or that but the treatment will be for either. Justifying verbally what you are doing and why helps you understand and educates the patient. Also explaining what exercises are for helps with compliance.
What are your plans for the future?
I would like to start a boarding canine rehabilitation centre eventually!
It is great being an osteopath because...
The feeling of privilege to be trusted by your patients. You hear a hilarious story with one patient and the next could be tragic but very briefly you get a glimpse of the real person beneath all the different personas.
The most rewarding thing about being an osteopath is...
Doing something you love you never have a bad day - you sometimes have exhausting or hectic days but never a bad one.
What would you say to someone who might be considering a career in osteopathy?
Do it! The course is challenging but so worth it. I did the course as a mature student but I wish I had done it as a school leaver.
