About the course
This two-day course will introduce you to an exercise-based approach to patient care informed by hatha yoga principles. It is designed to help manual therapists and those who work with patients to develop their skills in delivering group exercise which will extend and support their patient care.
The NICE guidelines for low back pain and sciatica published in November 2016 state that low back pain management should: “Provide people with advice and information, tailored to their needs and capabilities, to help them self-manage their low back pain with or without leg pain, at all steps of the treatment pathway”. Manual therapy is recommended but only as part of a treatment package which includes exercise.
This course is aimed at osteopaths and other manual therapists who have an interest in utilising existing knowledge to build and develop exercise prescription for low back pain. The course will enable practitioners to better encourage patients to use movement and tailored exercise to: address pain, improve musculoskeletal strength and stability, or have a broader knowledge base in order to signpost patients to exercise classes. This course will also touch on some ideas and thinking about relaxation and mindfulness. The foundation principles of the course are taken from hatha yoga practice.
No previous yoga experience is required. Please note this course has practical components which will be on a floor based mat. Delegates will be invited to perform some of the exercises barefoot, although this is not compulsory.
The course aims to provide delegates with:
- An overview of the principles and origins of hatha yoga
- An understanding of principles and practice of exercise and rehabilitation.
- An overview of the NICE guidelines and how they relate to manual therapists.
- A basic understanding of how a yoga based approach can help improve general mobility, muscular strength, joint stability and balance.
- A practical knowledge of the basic movement (posture groups) which can form the basis of an exercise prescription for low back pain.
- How to adapt, modify and sequence movement to form a basic class plan tailored to individual needs.
- How to introduce relaxation and mindfulness to patients.
Attendees are asked to bring the following equipment with them:
- Yoga mat (optional)
- A cushion (optional)
- A blanket
*Please note: Registration for this course is from 9am and the course runs from 9.30am until 5.30pm. A sandwich and salad lunch is provided.
About the tutor
Yinka Fabusuyi graduated from the UCO (then BSO) in 1992 and has been a practising osteopath since. From 2002-2005 she delivered workshops at Kings College Hospital medical school to fifth year medical students on the application of osteopathy in an NHS setting and its place within the frame work of musculoskeletal care.
In 2000 she completed the British Wheel of Yoga teacher training course. Yinka has taught yoga to adults, children, antenatally and to young people with hearing impairment over the last 17 years. She currently teaches two yoga classes per week and is a clinic tutor at UCO, as well as a lecturer in communication and case history taking skills. Yinka has practised yoga for many years and have seen at first hand the benefits of regular movement and exercise for chronic pain. She is excited about having the opportunity to share her knowledge with others.
