The BSc (Hons) Integrated Nutrition & Dietetics is a new and progressive course that will provide you with a comprehensive and integrative approach to practice by combining the best from all branches of the dietetic and nutrition professions. The course will present you with evidence-based nutrition science and clinical practice frameworks, advanced patient-care skills and methods, and a critical approach to the latest dietetic and nutritional interventions. A detailed and applied understanding of the biosciences will provide you with a robust scientific foundation on which extensive research and evidence-based theories and practice will be built.

Across your three years of study, you will gain a deep, systems-based understanding of the complexities of the human body in health and disease, and the role of nutrition and dietetics in the promotion of optimal health and modifying the path and progression of acute and chronic illness. Each year the course will consolidate and expand on the knowledge and research skills gained, giving you the confidence and capabilities to make a real difference in a complex healthcare landscape.

From year one, you will have the opportunity to apply your knowledge through clinical skills based practical sessions, and within the supervised student clinic. You will spend a minimum of 1,000 hours in direct contact with service users at both the UCO Clinic and our off-site clinical community partnership placements and external placements. Here you will develop skills as a service user-centred nutrition practitioner. In addition to the extensive scientific training and comprehensive clinical methods that form the basis of this degree course, you will work alongside a range of other healthcare professionals during community, hospital and private practice-based placements. You will also train in coaching and communication skills, facilitating your development as a confident and highly adaptable healthcare professional.

Upon graduation you will be able to apply to register with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a Dietitian, subject to HCPC approval of the course. The HCPC recognises graduates as meeting the highest standards of education and research, as well as having the experience and skills required to apply their knowledge safely and effectively in a clinical setting.

Entry requirements

  • Five GCSEs at grades A-C, including Mathematics and English Language
  • Three A Levels (or equivalent qualifications - see the Course Information Form for more details, available to download from this page following course approval process) which should include Biology and one other science. A typical offer is three A Levels at grades BBC, normally with a B in Biology.
  • Students whose first language is not English are required to demonstrate fluency in written and spoken English equivalent to an IELTS score of 7 or above, with no individual component below 6.5.
  • Applicants will be invited to attend an interview where their suitability for a career in nutrition & dietetics will be assessed.

Course structure & delivery

The BSc (Hons) Integrated Nutrition & Dietetics course is structured as a ‘spiral curriculum’, with students applying knowledge in new ways throughout the degree, with the subject matter increasing in complexity with each encounter and reinforcing previous learning. The concept and practise of being a nutrition & dietetics professional is at the heart of the programme. It is designed to retain a degree of flexibility to allow for effective context-specific delivery. As students progress through the curriculum, the greater demands on them will be matched by an increasing confidence in their ability to respond in clinical situations. This approach to learning is used throughout the programme and is applied in context within the clinical setting.

Assessment & feedback

The assessment strategy aims to ensure the course is reliable, valid and fair, and has been designed to ensure that the learning outcomes of the course are comprehensively achieved and that students become safe and competent nutrition & dietetics professionals. The ability to combine theoretical and practical skills is essential and so the assessment tools chosen reflect the type of knowledge or skills clinical nutrition & dietetics professionals require, helping students to build confidence in applying their learning effectively. The assessment programme reflects this with a mixture of academic assessment tools and practical examinations.

As the BSc (Hons) Integrated Nutrition & Dietetics is a new course and we would like to encourage applicants to study towards a brilliant and rewarding career in healthcare, we are pleased to offer a special introductory tuition fee discount for 2019 entry only. Students holding an offer of a place on this course will receive a 20% reduction in tuition fees. Therefore, the tuition fee for the 2019-20 academic year for Home/EU students will be £7,400 instead of £9,250; and the tuition fee for international students and those who are eligible to be charged ‘Overseas’ fees will be £8,880 instead of £11,100.

  2. Complete your application form. Filling in the application form is not a difficult process, but it may take some time to complete - there is a save and return option which allows you to complete your form in stages.

  4. You can apply for more than one course. The UCAS application fee for courses starting in 2019 is £18 if you’re applying to just one course, or £24 for multiple courses, and for late applications sent after 30 June. If you are applying for a course that starts in 2020, the application fee is £20 if you’re applying to just one course, or £25 for multiple courses and for late applications sent after 30 June 2020.

This course integrates nutrition and dietetics in one new discipline, and it follows the approved training framework set out by the HCPC for dietitians, but with a focus on ensuring graduates have the adaptive, modern and functional competences to meet ever changing patient and health care needs.

Subject to successful validation by HCPC, upon graduation students will be able to register as a dietitian. The HCPC recognises graduates as meeting the highest standards of education and research, as well as having the experience and skills required to apply their knowledge safely and effectively in a clinical setting.

Should it not be possible to gain HCPC approval by the start of the 2019-20 academic year, the UCO will intend to apply for approval for the beginning of the 2020-21 academic year. Subject to this application being approved, students who are made an offer of a place on this course for 2019-20 entry will be notified immediately and will have the option to defer to the following academic year. They will also be offered a tuition fee discount. Students reserve the right to withdraw their application and/or decline the offer at any time during the application process.
