This course will enable delegates to use hands-on detailed palpation in combination with a detailed history and active functional examination to find key areas of muscle dysfunction, focusing specifically on Thoracic-Outlet Syndrome (TOS) and shoulder dysfunction.
Identifying the parts of a muscle that do not fully contract is key to knowing where to treat, but often the pain that patients report may be located in a different area. A combination of localised pressure and active resistance from the patient allows a focal point of tension to be established. Asking the patient to then contract and relax the area over a range of movement being guided carefully by the practitioner allows arcs of poor quality movement to be identified and gradually enhanced. The net effect is more supportive and stronger muscle that is also flexible and adaptable to perform its function where it is located in the body.
Some of the types of problem FAR may be able to help with include:
- Hip stiffness that affects stride and balance
- Recovery after a joint replacement (hip/knee)
- Chronic postural spinal stiffness in the upper back associated with tension headaches
- Shoulder stiffness and frozen shoulder
- Long term recovery after accidents like whiplash
- Lower back pain and stiffness and certain types of sciatica
- Deep muscle stiffness associated with hypermobility

By the end of the course delegates will:
- Have gained an understanding of TOS and its epidemiology
- Be able to define shoulder dysfunction patterns
- Have knowledge of pre-disposing, maintaining and crossover factors for TOS and shoulder dysfunction
- Have an understanding of FAR and its uses
- Have gained an understanding of lifestyle ergonomics and be able to advise patients on remedial exercises
- Have participated in demonstrations and practical sessions on active palpation and FAR (Scalene, Sub OA, Rhomboid, Trapezius, Biceps Brachialis, Teres Major, LAT D, Deltoid)
As this course contains practical elements delegates should come prepared to dress down or wear loose-fitting gym clothes.
Who is the course leader?
This course is designed and delivered by Robin Lansman. Robin teaches students about his approach to Osteopathic Rehabilitation & Sports Injury Management at the University College of Osteopathy and across Europe. He has also been on-hand at many London Marathons to help runners of Spinal Injuries Association (SIA) & Alzheimer's Charities.
